VPN-Q 2006 does not detect Windows Vista with Service Pack 1

A:
Problem: When running the VPN-Q 2006 Client on Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 installed you receive the following error:

Fail - VPN-Q 2006 Client requires Windows XP SP2 (i386), Windows XP (x64) or Windows Vista but detected Microsoft Windows Vista {your edition} 6.0.6001.

Cause: VPN-Q 2006 has been designed to cater for Windows Vista SP1 prior to its release, however, Microsoft has broken with tradition and changed the OS build number for Windows Vista when SP1 is installed. Prior to Windows Vista, a Windows service pack did not effect the build number of the OS. The build number of the original release of Windows Vista is 6.0.6000, whereas the build number after installing SP1 has changed to 6.0.6001.

Resolution: After discussions with Microsoft, Winfrasoft has released an update to VPN-Q 2006 (SP3U4) to allow for the change in build number in Windows Vista after installing Service Pack 1. Winfrasoft has also tested Windows XP Service Pack 3 and there is no build number change in that release.

More information: The following is a list of Windows releases and their build numbers:

  • Version 5.0.2195 = Windows 2000 (All Service Packs)
  • Version 5.1.2600 = Windows XP (All Service Packs)
  • Version 5.2.3790 = Windows Server 2003 (All Service Packs)
  • Version 6.0.5384 to 6.0.5999 = Windows Vista Beta 2 onwards
  • Version 6.0.6000 = Windows Vista RTM
  • Version 6.0.6001 = Windows Vista SP1 AND Windows Server 2008 RTM & SP1
  • Version 6.0.6002 = Windows Vista SP2 AND Windows Server 2008 SP2
  • Version 6.1.XXXX = Windows 7
