Q:
What's new in Service Pack 1 for VPN-Q 2006?

A:
Service Pack 1 includes various fixes and new features based on customer feedback. In order to benefit from all the new features in SP1 the server installation must be upgraded and a new client setup package must be created and distributed.

Service Pack 1 Fixes / Updates

  • Increased error information for activation connectivity issues. (Auto-update)
  • Fixed issue to allow “Log on using dial-up connection” feature to function with VPN-Q 2006 client. Note: To activate this feature the client must be installed with Admin rights as per the Windows security model.
  • Fixed issue with blocking installations on Windows XP 64bit.
  • Fixed minor issues with the update engine and added more verbose update logging. (Auto-update)
  • Fixed ISA Configuration Wizard to allow access to WSUS and Windows Update at the same time. Note: Two separate rules are created if both options are selected, if neither option is selected no rule is created. A pre-SP1 update rule will be migrated to the new format when the ISA Wizard is first run.

Service Pack 1 Enhancements

  • Added support for client installation to detect .NET Framework 2.0 in addition to 1.1.
  • Added support for multiple client installs on a single PC. SP1 allows for one install instance per licence file.
  • Removed “Save Password” option from client by default. New optional setting via server admin.
  • Removed Advanced tab from client.
  • Added Authentication update to allow for PAP, CHAP and MS-CHAP in addition to MS-CHAPv2.
  • Client connection name changed to “Connection to [company name]” where [company name] is listed in the licence file. This is not available on the Free Edition as no licence file exists.
  • Client setup file is approximately 6% smaller.
  • Minor client UI and cosmetic updates.
  • Removed rqc.exe from distribution files, now uses Microsoft supplied copy on the ISA / RRAS server to cater for any future Microsoft updates.
  • Moved central logging capability to Enterprise Edition only and added WSUS support to Standard Edition. This feature move represents a better fit for Standard Edition customers.

Auto-update: VPN-Q includes an auto-update engine that will update the client component automatically - provided that this feature has not been disabled in Enterprise edition. Not all the updates in SP1 can be deployed via this mechanism as many of the updates in SP1 relate to the server administrator or the Microsoft Connection Manager. SP1 fixes that are available via auto-update are indicated in the list above.
